  • Three UCSC professors elected AAAS Fellows

Three scientists at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have been awarded the distinction of AAAS Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the association announced this week. They are Phillip Crews, professor of chemistry and biochemistry; Darrell Long, professor of computer science in UCSC's Baskin School of Engineering; and Pradip Mascharak, professor of chemistry and biochemistry.  More

  • Bringing the Local IEEE to UCSC

A researcher at UCSC has joined the local IEEE Santa Clara Valley Section as an officer for the Monterey Bay Subsection. Prof. Matthew Guthaus was recently elected as Vice-Chair of the Monterey Bay subsection. Other officers include faculty  from the Naval Postgraduate School (Prof. Weilian Su and Prof. Frank Kragh) in Monterey and a Silicon Valley Consultant (Mr. Marcelo Siero). The section has been recently hosting talks on "At Home Supercomputing" at UCSC's Jack Baskin School of Engineering. The most recent talks have had speakers from NVIDIA and AMD to discuss  NVIDIA's CUDA and AMD's Stream Computing architectures, respectively. Future talks will be from researchers at Intel, Apple, and others.  More

  • UCSC to host international renewable energy program

Last summer, U.S. and Danish students learned firsthand about renewable energy technologies being implemented in Denmark through a program organized by faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Next year, UCSC will host the four-week summer program, along with NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley.  More

  • Magnetic nanotags allow sensitive detection of cancer biomarkers

The detection of cancer-associated proteins, or biomarkers, in blood samples is a potentially powerful tool for early diagnosis of cancer and monitoring of cancer treatment. A team led by researchers at Stanford University and the University of California, Santa Cruz, has developed a compact prototype detector that uses magnetic nanotechnology to spot cancer-associated proteins in a human blood serum sample with much higher sensitivity than current detectors.  More
